CHOCO TAC-Oh, no!!!!!!

Choco_Taco

We will miss you, Choco Taco. Because there can never be enough taco-inspired foods in the world.

OK, so (obviously) a Choco Taco is not a taco. But (dang/caramba!) it hits the spot when what you really want is an ice-cream-truck-on-the-street kind of treat. And, soon, the Choco Taco will be no more.

Klondike, the maker of the Choco Taco (and other beloved treats like the Klondike Bar) announced that it will be discontinuing the Choco Taco. In this somewhat corporate-robot-speak statement on the Klondike website, they explained why: “Over the past 2 years, we have experienced an unprecedented spike in demand across our portfolio and have had to make very tough decisions to ensure availability of our full portfolio nationwide. A necessary but unfortunate part of this process is that we sometimes must discontinue products, even a beloved item like Choco Taco.”

Lateenz Translation: Lately, people have been eating our stuff faster than we can make it. We know that people get upset when they show up at the supermarket and they can’t find a Klondike Bar when they really, really want one.  Also, it’s possible they might try (and get hooked on) another brand of ice cream!  We’ve decided that it’s better for business to have the Klondike Bar available at your supermarket all of the time, than the Klondike Bar + Choco Taco available only some of the time. So, we’re killing the Choco Taco.

In response, the internet did what the internet does: (1) exploded in horror at the loss of the Choco Taco; and (2) stepped in to fill the Choco Taco-sized hole soon to be found in people’s hearts and bellies. In no time at all, about a bazillion make-your-own Choco Taco posts and videos like this one have appeared.

In case this is more work than you had in mind, you might want to try this (lazier) alternative:

Lateenz Cheater Choco Taco “Recipe”

Buy some pre-made waffle cones like these or these or these.  Take one waffle cone, wrap it in a damp paper towel and pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds or so (you may have to experiment with the exact time on your microwave). When you take the waffle cone out, it should be soft enough to unroll into a circle. Working quickly, drape the waffle circle over a kitchen spoon handle (like in the video above) until it hardens into a (roughly) taco shape.  Repeat the process until you have as many “taco” shells as you want.

Take your favorite ice cream and let it sit out a bit until it is soft but not completely melted.  Then, fill the waffle tacos with ice cream.  Top with store-bought chocolate sauce and peanuts or whatever other goodies rock your world.  Place them in a taco holder, serve, and enjoy.
